Camp Moss

Camp Moss provides children with complex heart defects—who for medical reasons may be unable to attend other summer camps—the opportunity to experience camp in a fun, medically safe and supportive environment.

Camp Moss is for children who have been treated for cardiac disease at Cook Children’s Medical Center or Children’s Health-Dallas. Camp is held each summer at Camp John Marc during the last week of June. Located near Meridian, Texas, this 170-acre campground is designed to be completely accessible, and is a state-of-the-art therapeutic camping facility with specially trained staff. Campers stay in air-conditioned cabins with trained volunteer cabin counselors.

Camp staffing

Camp staff is comprised of volunteers, Camp John Marc summer staff, as well as a full medical team. Staff who attend Camp Moss are composed of nurses, nurse practitioners, child life specialists, social workers, physicians, and other community volunteers. All volunteers have completed thorough background checks and are specifically chosen to assist with the needs of our campers.

Medical care

The medical team provides medical supervision 24 hours a day. The dispensing of medicine is very closely monitored by registered nurses and given as prescribed by your child's doctor in our camp medical building. Children are required to bring their own medications to camp which are checked in and gone over with nurses at camper check-in.

Camper selection

Girls and boys from 8-16 years of age with complex heart disease are potentially eligible for camp. However, there are limited camper spaces available.
