At Cook Children's, we know that diagnosing and treating head injuries in children and teens requires special skills, and that's what sets us apart.

The Cook Children's Sports Performance Orthopedic Rehab Team Specialists (SPORTS) team are experts in concussion rehabilitation and are well trained in the unique needs of evaluating and treating children and adolescents who have impairments or complications after suffering a concussion.

What is a concussion?

A concussion is a brain injury that causes temporary changes in the way the brain works. You might think they happen when someone is knocked unconscious while playing sports. But concussions can happen with any head injury, very often without a loss of consciousness.

Some of the more common concussion symptoms we see include:

  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Problems with balance
  • Forgetfulness
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Problems with vision

Why Cook Children's SPORTS concussion rehabilitation?

While most concussions heal on their own, a concussion is a brain injury. Depending on how severe it is, returning to play too soon, or bumping the head before the concussion heals can result in long-term damage to the brain.

Cook Children's SPORTS concussion rehab program is staffed by a pediatric rehab team experienced in the diagnosis and treatment of children and adolescents with a concussion.

Even the slightest brain injury can impact your child's behavior, memory, ability to focus or learn. At Cook Children's, our goal to help your child or teen fully recover so they can safely return to school, sports and other activities.

Our team

All members of Cook Children's concussion rehab program are trained in pediatrics and sports therapy. Our team includes:

In some cases, your child may also be seen by one of our neuropsychologists.

Your child's treatment plan, and the type or types of therapy he or she receives will be customized based on the injury and any impairments or complications that may be identified during the diagnosis. Length of treatment and recovery time will depend on the extent of injury to your child's brain.

Our team will work with you and your child to create an individualized treatment plan that addresses his or her specific needs. We'll even work with your child's school so that classwork doesn't suffer.

Whether it's playing a sport or simply playing, at Cook Children's, our concussion specialists have one focus — getting your child back in the game of life.
