An echocardiograph uses ultrasound waves to capture an image of the heart muscle and the heart's valves to help doctors diagnose possible problems. This amazing technology even allows doctors to see a baby's heart while it's still in the womb.
Cook Children's Fetal Echocardiography is led by Lisa Roten, M.D., medical director of the Echo Lab and associate medical director of Cardiology, and Rebecca Davis, RDCS, technical director of the Echo Lab. Davis plays an important role in the program as the technical director. With more than 15 years of experience in pediatric echocardiography, Davis is one of only 13 American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography fetal registered sonographers in Texas.
Dr. Roten works to give a high level of care to the expectant mother by providing the fetal ultrasound, diagnosis and counseling during the first visit. If the fetus requires surgery, a follow-up consultation is arranged for the parents to discuss the upcoming surgery with either Eldad Erez, M.D., or Vincent Tam, M.D. This team approach allows families to meet the surgeon who will care for their infant and ask additional questions.
The program's staff is proud of achieving accreditation in fetal echocardiography from the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Echocardiography Laboratories. Only four centers in Texas have achieved this status. In addition, Cook Children's is the only lab with mobile accreditation. This demonstrates how Cook Children's works hard to provide expert care to our community and we are committed to providing easy access for all patients and their families.
Patients and pregnant mothers are referred for echocardiography to diagnose and/or evaluate possible heart conditions.
The Echocardiography Lab (Echo Lab) is located on the second floor of Cook Children's Medical Center. The Echo Lab performs diagnostic testing on patients in the lab, as well as in the Emergency Department, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), Cath Lab and cardiac step down area (located at 3 Pavilion).
