Adolescent and
Young Adult program
Our Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) program provides a focus of resources, interests and expertise around the needs of oncology patients diagnosed with cancer over the age of 15.
AYAs often feel out of place in a pediatric or adult clinic. Our vision is to provide a medical home just for them in the supportive culture they need.
What we do
- A cancer occurring in an AYA patient may have a different biology than the same cancer in a younger child or an older adult; therefore, treatment strategies should be individually based on the patient's tumor and current age-specific, evidence-based knowledge.
- An AYA patient has many life issues in addition to their cancer diagnosis including school, work, self image, peer relations and finances. These issues are addressed within our AYA program.
- Sensitive, skilled providers are needed to discuss relevant topics with the AYA population like sexuality, fertility, risk taking behavior and substance abuse. Our providers are comfortable discussing these topics.
When we meet
We meet monthly and our events include education programs and opportunities to learn more about available resources. Additionally social activities are available so AYAs can network with each other, like family picnics, a Christmas party and sporting events.
