MIBG Suite

The bed boards help the bed placement staff to see where available beds are located. In 2013, Cook Children’s Hematology and Oncology began offering I-131 metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) therapy for neuroblastoma patients. Patients receiving this therapy as part of a clinical research trial will stay in the MIBG suite, a special-lead lined room designed to minimize radiation exposure to the family and staff caring for the patient. Doctors and nurses wear special clothing to minimize their contamination should they have to enter the room to take care of the child. The MIBG suite also has a room next door especially for the child's family. This gives parents a comfortable place to be near their child and allows them to keep a watchful eye over their child through a window.

Electronic bed management

The bed boards help the bed placement staff to see where available beds are located. In March of 2013, in collaboration with Information Technology and Nursing, Cook Children's Medical Center implemented new electronic bed management software to improve patient throughput, medical center communications and service to families throughout the 450-bed hospital. The bed boards help the bed placement staff to see where available beds are located. Each unit also has its own unique floor diagram that shows automatic updates with new orders, real time environmental services status and bed placement communication.
