Ana Gomez M.D., Ph.D.

Ana Gomez M.D., Ph.D.Ana Maria Gomez, MD, PhD has been a pediatric pathologist and the Pathology/Laboratory Medical Director with Cook Children's Medical Center since 2009.

Dr. Gomez received her medical degree from the Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana, Medellin, Colombia, South America in 1984, an MS in 1987 and a PhD in 1991, both in Immunology from the University of Cincinnati Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Cincinnati, Ohio. She was an Intern in General Medicine at Leon XIII Hospital in Medellin, Colombia from 1983-1984, a General Practitioner, Obligatory Rural Social Services Regional Hospital in Caldas, Colombia from 1984-1985, and a Staff Family Physician at San Javier Hospital in Medellin, Colombia in 1985. Dr. Gomez completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Molecular Virology and Immunology Program at the McMaster University Health Sciences Center, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada in 1995. She was a Resident in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine from 1996-2000, Chief Resident in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine from 1999-2000, she completed a fifth year Fellowship in Gastrointestinal Pathology in 2001, and she completed a Fellowship in Pediatric Pathology at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital in 2002.

Dr. Gomez sits on the Risk Management Committee, the Cancer Committee, and the Trauma Committee and she has professional affiliations with the Society for Pediatric Pathology, and the College of American Pathologists.

Dr. Gomez is certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic/Clinical Pathology, and Pediatric Pathology, and she is certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, Canada.

Fernando Castro-Silva M.D.

Fernando J Castro-Silva M.D.Fernando J. Castro-Silva, MD., has been practicing hematopathology and pediatric pathology withCook Children's Medical Center since 2013.

Dr. Castro graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles in 1985. He continued with post graduate study in Medical Technology at California State University, Dominguez Hills, and completed an internship in Medical Technology at White Memorial Medical Center, Los Angeles in 1987. Dr. Castro then practiced as a licensed Clinical Laboratory Scientist in Southern California for over a decade, during which time he became a board certified Specialist in Blood Banking, and managed various general and specialty clinical laboratories.

Dr. Castro subsequently studied medicine, and was awarded a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Colorado, Denver in 2007. He then completed residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at the University of Colorado in 2011, and was selected Chief Resident from 2010- 2011. Afterward, Dr. Castro completed a Fellowship in Hematopathology at University of Texas Southwestern in 2012, and practiced there until 2013 when he joined Cook Children's.

He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pathology, and Board Certified in Hematopathology.

Irene Sanchez M.D.

Irene Castaneda Sanchez M.D.Irene Castaneda-Sanchez, MD, has been a pediatric pathologist with Cook Children's Medical Center since 2009.

She graduated with a BS in psychology from the University of Texas-Pan American in 1991, and she received an MA in school psychology in 1994. Dr. Sanchez received her medical degree from the University of Texas Medical School at Houston in 2004. She completed her residency in Pathology at the University Health Sciences Center in San Antonio, Texas in 2008 and completed a fellowship in Pediatric Pathology at the University of Texas Southwestern/ Children’s Medical Center in Dallas in 2009.

Dr. Sanchez was appointed the Medical Director of Cook Children's Northeast Hospital Laboratory in May of 2014 and she sits on the Continuing Medical Education Committee at Cook Children's Medical Center since June 2014. She has professional affiliations with the Society for Pediatric Pathology, the College of American Pathologists, the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, and the American Society for Clinical Pathology.

Dr. Sanchez is certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic/Clinical Pathology and Pediatric Pathology.

Linda Margraf M.D.

Linda Russell Margraf M.D.Linda Russell Margraf, MD has been a pediatric pathologist with Cook Children's Medical Center since 2012.

Dr. Margraf attended Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida and she graduated with a BS in ACS Chemistry from the University of Florida at Gainesville in 1979. Dr. Margraf received her medical degree from the University of South Florida College of Medicine, Tampa in 1985. She began her residency in Pathology at the University of South Florida College of Medicine Affiliated Hospitals Training Program in Tampa and completed it at University Hospitals of Cleveland/Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio in 1989. She completed two Fellowships in Pediatric Pathology, the first at University Hospitals of Cleveland/Case Western Reserve University in 1980 and the second at Texas Children’s Hospital/Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas in 1992.

Dr. Margraf is the Clinical Consultant for Anatomic Pathology and she sits on the Institutional Review Board, the Cancer Committee, and the Tissue Committee. She has professional affiliations with the Society for Pediatric Pathology, where she is past president, the Pulmonary Pathology Society, and she is a board member for the National Board of Medical Examiners.

Dr. Margraf is certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic/Clinical Pathology and Pediatric Pathology.

Sandy Cope-Yokoyama M.D.

Sandy Cope-Yokoyama M.D. Sandy Cope-Yokoyama, MD has been a pediatric pathologist with Cook Children's Medical Center since 2014.

Dr. Cope graduated with a BS in chemistry, magna cum laude, from Allegheny College, Meadville, Pennsylvania in 1997 and she received her medical degree from the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas in 2002. Dr. Cope completed her residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at Baylor College of Medicine Affiliated Hospitals, Houston, Texas in 2006 and was Chief Resident from July 2004 - June 2005. She completed a fellowship in Pediatric Pathology at Texas Children’s Hospital/Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas in 2008. Dr. Cope was Assistant Professor, Department of Pathology at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas from August 2008 - July 2014.

She is certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic/Clinical Pathology and Pediatric Pathology.

Stacey Berry M.D.

Ana Gomez M.D., Ph.D.Stacey Berry, MD, joined the Department of Pathology at Cook Children’s Medical Center in 2016.

Dr. Berry graduated with a BS in biology from the University of Houston in 1994, and she received her medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston, TX, in 2002. She completed her residency in Anatomic Pathology at the University of Washington in Seattle, WA in 2005, and she completed a fellowship in Pediatric Pathology at Seattle Children’s Hospital in 2006. She was an associate pathologist for ten years at Banner Desert and Cardon Children’s Medical Centers, Mesa, AZ, and was appointed medical director from 2014-2016.

Dr. Berry has professional affiliations with the Society for Pediatric Pathology. She is certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic Pathology and Pediatric Pathology.

Yvette Dzurik M.D.

Yvette Bordelon Dzurik M.D.Yvette Bordelon Dzurik, MD, has been a hematopathologist with Cook Children's Medical Center since 2007.

Dr. Dzurik graduated with a BS in biology from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in 1998 and she received her medical degree from Louisiana State University Health Science Center in 2002. She completed her residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee in 2006 and she completed a fellowship in Hematopathology, also at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in 2007.

Dr. Dzurik was appointed the Medical Director of the Cook Children's Grapevine Infusion Center Laboratory in April of 2009. She has professional affiliations with the Society of Hematopathology, Clinical Cytometry Society, the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, the American Society for Clinical Pathology, and the College of American Pathologists, fellow.

Dr. Dzurik is certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic/Clinical Pathology and Hematopathology.

Morgan A. Pence Ph.D., D (ABMM)

Morgan A. Pence Ph.D., D (ABMM)Morgan A. Pence, Ph.D., D (ABMM) has been a clinical microbiologist with Cook Children’s Medical Center since 2014.

She graduated Cum Laude with a BS in Molecular and Cellular Biology from The University of Illinois at Urbana-Campaign in 2006. Her senior thesis was titled “Breeding and survival of novel and dystonic mouse lines and characterization of Dyt1 knock-in and knockdown mice.” Dr. Pence received her Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences from The University of California, San Diego in 2012 after completing her dissertation on “Molecular genetic analysis of bacterial antimicrobial peptide resistance phenotypes.” She subsequently completed a Clinical Microbiology fellowship in 2014 at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.

Dr. Pence has professional affiliations with The American Society for Microbiology, Southwestern Association of Clinical Microbiology, Pan American Society for Clinical Virology and Infectious Diseases Society of America. She serves on the hospital Antimicrobial Stewardship Committee, Infection Control Committee and Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee.

Van Leung-Pineda Ph.D.

Van Leung-Pineda, Ph.D.Van Leung-Pineda, Ph.D. has been a clinical chemist at Cook Children’s Medical Center since 2011.

He graduated with Honors with a BS in Microbiology and Cell Science from The University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida in 1998. Dr. Pineda received his Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences also from The University of Florida in 2003. He was a postdoctoral research associate at Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Washington University in Saint Louis School of Medicine, St. Louis, Missouri from 2003-2009, a Clinical Chemistry Fellow from 2009-2010 and Co-Chief Fellow, Clinical Chemistry from 2010-2011 in the Department of Pathology and Immunology at Washington University in Saint Louis School of Medicine.

Dr. Pineda has professional affiliations with the American Association for Clinical Chemistry and he is a Diplomate of the American Board of Clinical Chemistry.
