When a child is in crisis and requires 24 hour supervision, they are admitted into our inpatient psychiatry program. Our focus is on crisis stabilization and returning the child to his or her home as soon as possible, usually within 6-7 days.
Our inpatient program is the only inpatient, not-for-profit program in North Texas exclusively for children ages 2 through 12. We are also one of the few programs that offer treatment for children who have profound autism or intellectual or developmental disabilities. We also accept children with complex medical conditions that other freestanding psychiatric facilities are not able to treat.
Our 11-bed unit, located in the Rees Jones Behavioral Health Center on the campus of Cook Children’s Medical Center, provides a highly structured and intensive method of care.
Our inpatient psychiatry program offers services 24 hours a day including:
Each part of the program is carefully planned to help the child improve his or her mood and behavior. Many of these activities take place in groups.
Our staff consists of board-certified child and adolescent psychiatrists, registered nurses, licensed family therapists, program specialists, recreational therapists, Fort Worth Independent School District (FWISD) teachers and a FWISD teacher's aide.
The entire treatment team meets daily to discuss the child's treatment, goals and progress. The doctor also meets with the child to discuss their progress. Each child's treatment plan is tailored to his individual goals and addresses the specific behaviors that need help.
The treatment team may identify other issues such as health problems and social needs that should be addressed while the child is in our care as well. As part of Cook Children's integrated health care system, we have easy access to medical specialists which allows both emotional and physical concerns to be addressed.
A strong focus is placed on re-establishing the family as the most important influence in the child's life. We encourage family involvement in all programs and provide parent education to maintain the child's long-term well-being.
