Choosing a Pediatrician

Parent-to-be? It's a good idea to choose a pediatrician before baby comes. But how do you choose the right pediatrician for you? We have some helpful tips to get you started.

One of the best ways to find a good pediatrician is to do your own personal shopping. And like the holidays, shopping early can help you avoid the last minute rush. A prenatal consultation gives you the chance to make sure you feel comfortable with your baby's doctor – one less thing to worry about in the busy days following your newborn's birth.

Cook Children's guide to choosing a pediatrician can help you identify what to look for so you feel informed and confident in your child’s care. So, where to start searching?

Friends

Talk to other parents about their pediatricians. If friends that are similar to you in belief systems, medical philosophy and personality like their doctor, chances are you’ll like them, too. Word-of-mouth (both online and off-line) is still a great way to learn about doctors in your area.

Practice websites

What’s a priority to one family is different than what may be important to others. A practice webpage can provide practical details like office hours, insurance information, availability of care after hours and/or by phone, etc. If having a doctor that is up-to-date with the latest medical knowledge and technology is important to you, make sure that their website looks professional and is updated. Check out the doctor's bio to learn more about their background and special interests. If it seems like a good fit, call and ask for an interview appointment. Many offices will provide this service for free.

Ranking websites

Ranking websites, such as healthgrades.com and vitals.com, can give some additional insight into what the doctor is like. These websites are not without fault, however. The number of reviewers is often small, so they can be skewed heavily by someone who has a negative experience. The number of reviews should be taken into account when evaluating the overall ratings.

So, how do you really know if your doctor is the best? The right question is this: How do you know if your doctor is the best for you?

  • Do you feel comfortable asking your doctor questions?
  • Do you trust the doctor's answers to your questions?
If the answers are yes, you’ve found a doctor you and your child can develop a growing relationship with.
