During Your Visit

During Your Visit icon

We realize that a visit to the medical center or a hospital stay can be overwhelming for your child, and for you. In order to make it go as smoothly as possible we've put together some information we think will be helpful. If you can't find the information you're looking for or if you have questions at any time, please call us at 682-885-4000.

Children aren't small adults, and Cook Children's isn't an adult hospital. While our number one focus is on treating your child, we also know that healing comes in many forms, including laughter, compassion, joy and hugs. Here, you'll find a world of patient and family support, because even when childhood gets complicated, we want to make things as simple as we can.

What to expect

For most visits you can expect:

  • To be asked about your child's medical history and current health status. Please share with us important information about your child's health and any changes you may have noticed.
  • A physical exam (including height and weight measurements, blood pressure and temperature)
  • Routine tests (blood, radiology, urine, etc.). Your doctor may schedule some tests before your visit in order to have the most up-to-date information.
  • Additional testing may be requested by your doctor depending on your child's condition.
  • Depending on the type of visit, you may also meet with various members of the medical team such as nurses, clinical technicians and Child Life specialists, to name a few.

Recreation and retail

A specialty visit, day service or hospital stay can be stressful. For that reason, we offer recreation and retail areas to help make your visit more comfortable. You'll find food, shops, a retail pharmacy, gift shop, play areas, a library and more. Visit here to see all of the conveniences we offer.
