Sandy earned her Bachelor of Science in nursing degree at Washburn University in Topeka, Kan., where she was inducted into Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society. Her life as a military wife provided opportunities to work in a variety of hospital settings, including cardiology, the intensive care unit and general practice. She worked as a hospice nurse while working on her master’s degree at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, Ala.
After obtaining her nurse practitioner certification, she worked in a college health setting for several years and then in a psychiatric residential setting, providing primary care to the residents. After a move to San Antonio, she worked with the U.S. Army and taught in the Family Nurse Practitioner program at University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Texas.
In North Carolina, she discovered her passion for working with children. Because of the rural location, she worked with specialists at Duke, Chapel Hill and East Carolina Universities to identify and manage patients with chronic conditions. She also obtained additional training in treating psychiatric disorders, ADD/ADHD and autistic spectrum disorders.
Through the years, she has volunteered at free medical clinics, domestic violence shelters and food pantries and with teen moms at Young Lives. She also has participated in medical mission trips to Honduras and the Dominican Republic.
