Burn/Wound Care

At Cook Children's, we have staff trained to care for pediatric patients with burns and wounds at locations in Fort Worth, Hurst and Mansfield. Our team's goal is to prevent infection, create healing, manage pain and minimize scarring.

Common referrals for burn and wound care:

  • Burns covering less than 25% total body surface area
    • Treadmill, chemical and electrical burns
  • Traumatic wounds
    • Punctures, bites, road rash, etc.
  • Pressure injuries
  • Dehisced surgical sites
  • Excoriating and non-healing diaper rash
  • Abscesses
  • Chronic wounds
  • Epidermolysis bullosa
  • Hidradenitis suppurativa
  • Pilonidal cysts
  • Wounds requiring wound VACs

* We do not provide ostomy care.


Cook Children's physical therapists perform burn and wound care at three locations. All orders are sent to the main Rehabilitation Services location at Cook Children's Medical Center, and then the patients are scheduled at the appropriate location.

Refer to our burn and wound care team

  • Outpatients from Cook Children's physicians – Place burn/wound care referral through Athena. Select "Wound Care Referral." Be sure to write "PT EVAL AND TREAT," along with patient's diagnosis and site of burn/wound.
  • Outpatients from other facilities – Fax order, patient demographics and insurance information to 682-885-6439. Be sure to write "PT EVAL AND TREAT" along with the patient's diagnosis and site of burn/wound.
