At Cook Children's, we know that children are not small adults. Diagnosing and treating vestibular disorders in children and teens requires special skills.

Cook Children's Sports Performance Orthopedic Rehab Team Specialists (SPORTS) are well trained in the unique needs of evaluating and treating children and adolescents who have impairments or complications after acquiring a vestibular disorder.

What is a vestibular disorder?

Located in the ear canal, the vestibular system sends signals to the brain that control muscle balance and eye coordination. There are many causes of vestibular disorders in children and teens. They can be the result of a viral or bacterial infection. They can also be caused by a congenital defect (something your chid is born with), a genetic defect, a tumor and even some chemicals and drugs. A head injury or concussion during sports, play or in an accident, may also cause a vestibular disorder. The symptoms are often dizziness, difficulty with balance or coordination and controlling eye movements.

Why Cook Children's SPORTS?

Cook Children's has one of the only pediatric sports medicine programs in North Texas. Our focus is 100 percent on kids. Because children and teens are still growing, the types of sports injuries and they incur and the therapy they require are very different from adults.
