Lucy Rings the Bell: A Leukemia Documentary
Being a parent is not for the faint of heart. You can't always plan for the unexpected. This is what the Garza family quickly learned one morning as they noticed an unusual spot on their daughter, Lucy's, nose. The next morning, their lives were forever changed, when Lucy woke up in extreme pain and unable to walk. Immediately seeking answers, the Garza's rushed their daughter to the emergency room at Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth. At 3 years old, Lucy, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Over the next two years, Cook Children's became the Garza's home away from home, and both Lucy and her family looked forward to their inpatient stays and outpatient visits.
While at Cook Children's, Lucy and her family worked with child life specialists, befriended the majority of the nurses and staff in the Cook Children's Hematology and Oncology Center, where they built a special bond with their physician, Holly Pacenta, M.D.
"We were exactly where we needed to be to get the best treatment."
Mariel Garza, Lucy's mom
The collaborative efforts across multiple departments, coupled with warm and supportive staff, were instrumental in Lucy's recovery and her ability to ring the bell. It's a path that no child or family should have to walk, but if they do, we're here at every step. Because at Cook Children's, when you're here, you're like family.
