Coping with a medical diagnosis can have long-term effects on a child’s mental health. Our clinical therapy program focuses on addressing those challenges faced by children and families coping with chronic and/or life-threatening illnesses in our Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Heart Center/Cardiology, Hematology and Oncology, Main Medical Center, Neurology Migraines, Neurology Pain Management, NICU/NEST, Pulmonary, and TCU/RCU departments.
Our clinical therapists provide therapeutic support, crisis intervention and counseling services by providing understanding and assisting with coping skill development and parent education.
Counseling services may be provided using cognitive-behavioral, family-therapy or family systems model. Play therapy is used for small children.
Additional services for further mental health interventions may be recommended and coordinated by the therapists. When necessary, they perform mental health assessments and are able to work with the doctors assigned to the patient to ensure their emotional and behavioral needs are met. They are able to assist with mental health referrals as needed. They work as a part of the psychosocial team to support the patient's well-being.
The therapists are able to provide education to the patients and their families regarding the emotional effects of their chronic illness and the treatment. These illnesses take a severe emotional toll on not just the patient, but the families as well. These therapists are there to help create a support system for the family throughout the child's illness. Clinical therapists can work with the patient and/or family in the hospital, the clinic or in their offices.
