Meet Dr. Heather D. Volkman
Dr. Volkman is a board-certified dermatologist with the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology and cares for both pediatric and adult patients with skin diseases, skin cancers, and skin care needs. Her special interests are in autoimmune diseases, geno-dermatoses, and inflammatory dermatoses, such as psoriasis and eczema. Dr. Volkman has been serving as a consulting dermatologist for Cook Children's Medical Center and Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital of Fort Worth for over 9 years, and volunteers for Tarrant County Medical Society's Project Access.
Dr. Volkman grew up in Cleburne, Texas and graduated from Cleburne High School. Her undergraduate degree is from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, and she later attended medical school at University of North Texas Health Science Center-Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine in Fort Worth where she graduated first in her medical school class. Her internship and residency was in Cleveland, Ohio at Case Western Reserve University-Case Medical Center and saw patients at University Hospitals of Cleveland, MetroHealth Medical Center, Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital, Richmond Medical Center, and Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
Dr. Volkman honors include the Case Western Medical Center Research Recognition Award, Texas Osteopathic Medical Association Student Doctor of the Year Award, Dean Jacobson Financial Services Scholastic Award for Academic Excellence, Glasgow-Rubin Memorial Award, UNTHSC-TCOM President's Scholar Award, Dean's List at both UNTHSC-TCOM and Emory University, Sigma Sigma Phi Honors Society, and American Osteopathic Association Student Delegate.
Dr. Volkman's interests in medicine was heightened as a researcher at Emory University both in undergraduate school and again during medical school and continued through residency at Case Western Reserve University. Her research projects include Examining the genetic basis of skin disease in twin pairs and their families at Case Western Reserve University with Kevin Cooper, MD; Determining cutaneous and extra-cutaneous associations and treatment outcomes of refractory itching in a select patient population using retrospective analysis at Emory University with Robert A. Swerlick, MD and Suephy Chen, MD, MS; Computing the life impact of the diagnosis of stage I and stage III melanoma in a non-melanoma patient population using a computer-based utility program at Emory University with Suephy Chen, MD, MS; Studying the molecular interactions of proteins and DNA known to cause Fragile X Syndrome and Galactosemia at Emory University with Judy Fridovich-Keil, PhD.; Examining the anatomical location and associated function of a CNS transmembrane protein, neuregulin at Emory University with Douglas Falls MD; and Studying proteins expressed by astrocytes in damaged cerebral cortex at Emory University with Robert McKeon, PhD.
Dr. Volkman believes in educating her patients, the medical community, and the public about skin disease and has lectured on numerous occasions to include the American Academy of Dermatology, American Osteopathic College of Dermatology, Tarrant County Medical Society, Cook Children's Medical Center, Texas Christian University, Cleveland Dermatological Society, and many community organizations throughout Fort Worth.
Dr. Volkman has many interests outside the dermatology clinic. She is married and a mother to four children and enjoys jogging. Her other activities have been as a parent volunteer at Lily B. Clayton Elementary School and Trinity Valley School, a preschool teacher at Christ Chapel Bible Church, a skin cancer screener with the American Academy of Dermatology and volunteer at the Como Community ShareFest medical tent.

Dr. Volkman is very nice and professional. She is an attentive listener and gives great advice on every concern that was asked by my daughter. Dr. Volkman made sure my daughter understood everything explained to her and she took her time explaining everything. The staff greeted us as we came in and very professional.
