Meet Dr. Richard P. Howrey

Even in my youth, I knew I wanted to work in a profession where I would be able to help people. I've always been fascinated with science, so naturally, being a physician combined those two interests.

In medical school it was pretty clear that pediatrics was my calling. While others got frustrated with children when they didn't cooperate, I thoroughly enjoyed being able to play with the kids while they received treatment. In residency, I knew I wanted to specialize in a field in which I could gain a deeper knowledge in one specific area, and I was drawn to the hematology/oncology patients mostly because of how inspired they are. The children I encountered going through treatment showed incredible resilience. Caring for them was, and still is, a constant reminder to never take anything for granted.

During my fellowship, I was drawn to bone marrow transplant, in part, due to the intensive challenges that these patients can face, and I've also enjoyed the close relationships that I've developed with families, many of which have lasted for years.

While I am no longer a competitive swimmer, I continue to enjoy working out in my spare time. I also enjoy pursuing new hobbies, such as brewing beer at home, and spending time with my wife, a cardiologist, and our three kids.
