Research

Nurses at Cook Children's are at the forefront of pediatric health care, constantly seeking better ways to provide advanced medical treatments and deliver the highest standards in safety and quality care. Our nurses continually pursue knowledge, often earning masters and doctoral degrees along the way. Many are also actively involved in research in a variety of fields.

Although Cook Children's is not a traditional "academic" medical center, we are fortunate to have a strong research structure. Cook Children's Promise is to improve the health of every child in our region through the prevention and treatment of illness, disease and injury. An important part of this Promise is to provide the highest quality of care and safety built upon evidence from clinical and health services research.

Magnet recognition

The Magnet award is one of the most coveted and prestigious honors a hospital and nursing staff can achieve. It is given by The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), a subsidiary of the American Nurses Association. ANCC developed the Magnet program to recognize health care organizations that give the very best in nursing care and uphold traditions within the nursing profession.

Cook Children’s Medical Center is proud to have achieved its fourth Magnet designation from the American Nursing Credentialing Center, becoming the first freestanding children’s hospital in North Texas and the 10^th in the world to receive this esteemed recognition four times in a row. We became a Magnet-designated organization in 2006 and were re-designated in 2011, 2016 and 2021. This recognition of quality patient care and nursing excellence has been achieved by fewer than one percent of hospitals.

The Magnet Recognition Program is the gold standard in nursing excellence and validation of high quality patient outcomes. Research shows Magnet hospitals have increased patient satisfaction, decreased length of hospitalizations, and lower mortality rates, as well as above average nurse-satisfaction and retention rates.
