Tourette Syndrome Clinic
Tourette syndrome and other tic disorders can be especially challenging for children who have them, and for family members and caregivers.
Imagine having a disorder that causes sudden jerking motions or erratic behavior and not being able to control it. These situations often result in those who have them being ridiculed or feeling left out of activities with their peers and negative responses from adults. For these reasons, our clinic focuses on treating the entire needs of your child: physical, mental and emotional.
The Tourette Syndrome Clinic at Cook Children's specializes in the testing, diagnosis, evaluation and treatment of children, teens and young adults who have repetitive movement disorders.
On your child's first visit, he or she will be assessed by a Tourette syndrome and movement disorder specialist. The doctor will take a medical history of your child and family. A thorough medical exam will be performed, as well as a detailed neurological examination. Based on the initial findings, your doctor will discuss what types of testing your child may need, if any, as well as going over his or her treatment plan. The plan may include:
- Disorder education
- Medical treatment
- Behavioral therapy
